Didactic, Pedagogical Theory, and Democratic Education: Epistemological, Political, and Educational Interfaces

By problematizing the purposes of democratic education in light of dialogues between Pedagogy and Didactics, this book connects to the reflections inspired by the 23rd National Meeting on Didactics and Teaching Practices (ENDIPE), an event hosted by the Federal University of Paraíba, in the city of João Pessoa, from November 5 to 9, 2024.
The event gathered participants from across the country to discuss theoretical frameworks, strategies, and challenges involving resistance, persistence, and insurgency in the name of education and the democratic school, continuing its tradition as one of the most important academic events in the educational field in Brazil and Latin America.
Thus, the 23rd ENDIPE became a powerful space for questioning the meaning of Didactics in the face of deepening inequalities and the weakening of democracy.
Part of these inquiries are recorded in this volume, which brings together texts by the event’s invited speakers, presented in the thematic sessions that composed its program. Taken as a whole, the book reaffirms the importance of recognizing Didactics as a scientific discipline that, since the 1980s, has undergone a fertile paradigmatic reorientation, becoming increasingly relevant as a reference for critical analyses and proposals concerning teaching processes. Research in Didactics highlights how such processes have been affected by emerging issues such as school inequalities and their relations to social markers of difference; challenges in initial and continuing teacher education; the complexity of relationships between school culture and digital culture; human rights; sustainability; neoliberal policies; and their ultraconservative ideological offensives. The various chapters offer significant contributions to the construction of a reference framework aimed at analyzing and developing teaching processes in the face of civilizational and societal challenges, attacks on the rule of law, and, consequently, the erosion of the basic guarantees necessary for the exercise of participatory citizenship by all people.
